A wide, very shallow black disc that flares out almost flat and turns down at its rim, with two antique brass rings stacked above it on short posts and a brass cylinder capping the top. The brass is a soft aged gold and shows only from below or from the side, where it catches the light escaping between the rings. Beneath the disc a black cylindrical skirt drops down and holds the light in, leaving a bright ring at its open bottom. The underside of the disc is pale, so it bounces light back down. The proportions are wide and low. It measures 40cm across and 16.3cm tall, in metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHang it so the bottom of the shade sits about 80cm above the surface, a little higher if people walk beneath it rather than sit under it. Hung at that height the shade is read as an object in the room rather than as a source, and the light lands on the table instead of in the eyes of the people round it.
