It is covered all over in a cotton and linen fabric, cream with fine charcoal pinstripes running at regular intervals: vertically down the front and the ends, and front to back across the lid. The corners are softly rounded rather than square, the lid overhangs the body by a few millimetres all round, and three dark hinges are set along the back edge. Four small wooden feet lift it just clear of the floor. There are no handles on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 130cm it runs the width of a double bed and sits at the foot of one, which is where the 48cm height earns itself: it is seat height, so it takes someone putting shoes on, and the lid opens on to the whole 130 by 46cm footprint inside for spare bedding, blankets or boots. In a hall it does the same job against a wall, holding what would otherwise be on the floor and giving somewhere to sit while doing it.
