The glass is silvered rather than plain, and the silvering is worn and blotched, so the panels read as old mirror with the reeding running top to bottom. The reeding breaks the flame into vertical lines, so the light comes through as bands rather than a single point, and the silvered ground behind it throws the glow back out again.
