An opal glass bell with straight flared sides and a softly rounded shoulder, held by a turned antique brass collar that sits over the top of the glass like a shallow cap. The collar carries a knurled ring just above the shoulder, so the brass reads as two bands rather than one. The glass is warm white and evenly diffusing, and the bottom is left open so the light falls straight down as well as glowing through the body. A black flex runs up from the brass. Nothing else interrupts the shade and there is no diffuser across the rim. It measures 15cm across and 30cm tall, in glass and metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA shade this small works better in a run of two or three over an island than alone in the middle of a ceiling, where it reads as an accent rather than the main light. Hang it so the bottom of the shade sits about 80cm above the surface, a little higher if people walk beneath it rather than sit under it. Hung at that height the shade is read as an object in the room rather than as a source, and the light lands on the table instead of in the eyes of the people round it.
