Two black plates stacked over a short opal glass drum, with a brass cap above them held clear on posts so light escapes upward as well as down. The plates are wide, shallow and flat, one broader than the other, and their undersides are pale so they bounce light back into the room. The glass drum sits in a turned antique brass collar that is the brightest thing on the lamp. A slim black stem drops from the collar to a flat round black base. The brass shows at the top and at the collar and nowhere else. It measures 24cm across.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt suits a table, an island or a hallway, hung low enough to be looked at rather than into. Hang it so the bottom of the shade sits about 80cm above the surface, a little higher if people walk beneath it rather than sit under it. Hung at that height the shade is read as an object in the room rather than as a source, and the light lands on the table instead of in the eyes of the people round it.
