The outside of the tray and the whole of the bowl are carved in overlapping rounded scales, cut deep enough to throw a shadow, while the inside of the tray is left plain and smooth. It measures 38cm long and 16cm across, and stands 10cm high with the bowl in place.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe long part of the tray takes crackers, sliced cheese or bread, and the bowl at the end takes olives, chutney or nuts without them running into the rest. At 38cm it lies across the middle of a table within reach from both sides.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach piece is carved by hand from mango wood, so the grain and the depth of the cut differ from set to set. A controlled flame is then passed over the surface, which burns it lightly and brings the grain up darker, and the wood is smoothed by hand afterwards.
