The ground under the painting is cream, and the brushwork is uneven from block to block, denser in the middle of a stroke and thinner where it runs out.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 22.5cm this is a side plate rather than a dinner plate, and the width of the rim means bread, a pastry or a small pudding sits in the well without covering the painting. The well itself is shallow and flat, so it takes dry food rather than anything with a sauce.
