The two outer bands are a fine ribbed weave in olive brown and cream, and the centre panel is a deep looped pile in cream and soft blue with the loops set in diagonal rows. The two textures meet on a straight seam, so the change from one to the other reads as much by touch as by colour.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 60 by 40cm this is a rectangular cover rather than a square one, so it sits along the back of a sofa or across a bed, behind the small of the back. The looped centre stands well proud of the ribbed bands, which makes the cover read as texture first and colour second, and the soft blue only really carries at close range. On a sofa in front of the square Paduna in the same fabric, the two sizes stack front to back rather than side by side.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe cover is jute and cotton. Jute is a rain-fed crop that needs little in the way of fertiliser or pesticide, and it spins into a strong thread, which is combined with cotton for softness. The weaving, braiding and stitching are done by hand on a traditional Indian handloom, so the loops and the ribs fall a little differently on every cover. The Paduna is also made as a 50 x 50cm square.
