The roof is a low dome of solid metal punched right through with a repeating leaf pattern, and it sits above the glass on a collar of the same punched work. One of the six panels is hinged and swings out on a small wire catch, and the base is a shallow glass tray held in a brass rim.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe candle goes in through the hinged panel and stands on the glass base. Because the roof is punched rather than solid, light goes up through it as well as out through the glass, so a lit lantern throws the pattern of the perforations onto whatever is above it.
