The body flares from the base to a shoulder about a third of the way up, then draws in through a long taper to a pierced dome and a spire at the top. One panel is hinged as a door and closes on a small wire hook.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe dome is punched through with rows of small teardrops and dots, so with a candle lit inside the light leaves through the top as well as the glass, and the punching throws its own pattern onto the wall or ceiling above. At 47.5cm this is the large of two sizes, tall enough to stand on the floor beside a fireplace or a doorway as readily as on a hall table.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe panels are recycled glass and the frame is metal. Waste glass is collected and washed before it is crushed and melted down, and the frame is shaped by hand with the pattern punched through using traditional tools, so the brass sits unevenly and no two lanterns carry the same punch marks.
