A long plain shaft runs most of the height with the grain travelling straight up it, and beneath that shaft the wood swells into a baluster, steps in through a pair of collars and spreads into a disc foot. The top is a broad shallow dish with a metal pin set in the middle of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eStood with the shorter Nayati in front of it, the two read as a pair at different heights. It suits a mantelpiece, a hearth or a console against a plain wall. On a dining table 53cm would block the view across it. The dish at the top is 14.5cm wide and the pin holds a church candle upright.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMango wood takes a stain unevenly because the pores in it are open, and the dark stain sits heavier in the end grain than across the shaft, so the figure shows through as paler streaks. Each one is turned singly on a lathe and no two carry the same figure. There is a smaller Nayati at 38cm.
