Each shelf has an open grid base of close set rods and a front gallery wrapped in flat rattan strips, woven over and under the iron so that cane and metal alternate along the whole length. The weave returns round both ends of every shelf, so the rattan shows from the side as well as the front. Two pierced tabs at the top corners of the frame take the fixings.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe shelves stand 8cm off the wall, which takes a spice jar and very little more, so the rack sits close against the wall rather than projecting into the room. Each shelf is 45cm wide and will hold a row of jars, and because the front gallery is an open weave rather than a solid rail the labels stay in view.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe frame is iron and the weave is rattan, left in its natural tone. Rattan comes to maturity faster than most timbers and the same plant can be cut several times over. It is woven around the iron frame by hand.
