A slim black post rising from a flat round black disc base, carrying a wide shallow black dome clamped near the top on a short arm, tipped so the mouth faces down and out. The dome is a smooth curve, much broader than it is deep, with a pale lining that shows as a bright disc from below. A knuckle at the arm lets the head swing and tilt, and the head slides up and down the post. A black flex runs from the head and drops beside the post on show.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt stands beside a chair or at the end of a sofa, where it puts one pool of light exactly where it is needed without lighting the whole space. That is what a floor lamp is for: it takes the reading light off the ceiling and puts it at shoulder height, so the room can be lit softly and still be worked in.
