The whole face is etched by hand into concentric rings of fine dots and dashes, tightening into a dense rosette at the centre and opening out as they reach the rim. The rim turns up just enough to hold what stands on it. The etched marks catch the light against the flat black, so the pattern carries across a room.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 40.5cm the tray takes a bottle and glasses, or a group of candles, and it is wide enough to serve as the whole surface of a low table. It is for dry food only. It props upright against a wall and is used flat rather than carried, which is what the pattern is scaled for.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe tray is aluminium. The etching is done by hand with traditional tools, mixing older pattern work with newer drawing, so the spacing of the rings and the depth of each mark differ from tray to tray.
