Two small looped handles sit either side of that neck. The glaze is ochre and reactive: it runs glossy amber across the shoulder, breaks into darker brown streaks down one side and lightens again towards the foot, so the colour is layered rather than laid on evenly.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe opening is only 7cm across, which holds a few stems upright without needing anything to support them, and at 2.807kg empty the vase is heavy enough at the base that tall dried stems or branches will not tip it. At 38cm wide it takes up most of the depth of a console table or a deep shelf, and it holds dried seed heads. Dried stems, foliage and branches are what the narrow neck suits rather than a cut bunch.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe clay is Portuguese earthenware, and the horizontal rings left by the making are allowed to show through the glaze rather than being turned away.
