Canvas is a tightly woven, heavyweight cotton, which is why it holds its shape and stands up to daily handling far better than a lighter weave. The supplier treats this canvas for outdoor use and water resistance, so a shower on the patio does not soak straight through the way it would with an untreated cotton. The cover measures 45 x 45cm, the standard square size that fits the most widely sold cushion pads, so replacing or plumping the insert is straightforward.

This is a cushion built to move between the garden and the living room. The water-resistant finish means it earns its place on a garden bench or an outdoor sofa, and the plain, deep navy sits just as well tossed onto an indoor settee. In the photograph it pairs with a pale grey seat and a striped companion cushion, which shows how a solid navy anchors a mix rather than competing with a pattern. Because there is no print to clash, it works with almost any scheme you already own.

The cover is finished with an oxford border, the flat flange of fabric that runs around all four edges and frames the face, giving a tailored look rather than a plain knife edge. A zip closure runs along one side so the cover comes off for cleaning and the pad slips back in easily. The navy reads as a warm, dark blue in daylight and as near-black in low light, so it holds up well through evening use. Being a plain, hardwearing solid, it is the sort of piece you buy several of and keep for years.

Specification

Material

100% cotton canvas

Design

Plain, water-resistant, treated for outdoor use

Construction

Oxford border, zip closure

Size

45x45cm

Frequently Asked

Can I use this cushion outside?

Yes.
