A ball built up out of clustered opal bubbles, dozens of rounded blisters of different sizes packed over the whole surface so the sphere has no smooth face anywhere. The glass is a warm matt white and the bubbles read as soft shading rather than as cut edges, which keeps the cluster looking grown rather than moulded. It hangs from a low black domed cap with a finely ribbed collar above it, and a black braided flex runs up from that. The bottom of the ball is left open. Lit, each blister picks up its own highlight, so the whole surface breaks the light into small points. It measures 15cm across and 12cm tall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA shade this small works better in a run of two or three over an island than alone in the middle of a ceiling, where it reads as an accent rather than the main light. Hang it so the bottom of the shade sits about 80cm above the surface, a little higher if people walk beneath it rather than sit under it. Hung at that height the shade is read as an object in the room rather than as a source, and the light lands on the table instead of in the eyes of the people round it.
