A small opal glass bell, straight-sided with a softly rounded shoulder and an open rim, hung from a short black collar with a plain black flex above it. The glass is warm white and evenly diffusing, thick enough that the lamp never shows as a point. The collar is a plain band with no knurling or turned lines, so the fitting reads as glass with a minimum of metal. The shade is small and hangs on its own. The black against the warm white is the whole of the contrast. It measures 12cm across and 21cm tall, in glass and metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA shade this small works better in a run of two or three over an island than alone in the middle of a ceiling, where it reads as an accent rather than the main light. Hang it so the bottom of the shade sits about 80cm above the surface, a little higher if people walk beneath it rather than sit under it. Hung at that height the shade is read as an object in the room rather than as a source, and the light lands on the table instead of in the eyes of the people round it.
