At 87cm the back stands well above a table top, so a row of them reads as a line of backs down a room rather than disappearing under the edge. The wash pulls the different woods towards a single tone while leaving the variation in grain and colour showing underneath, and knots, splits and rough patches are left in rather than filled out.
