The strands run out from the centre like the ribs of a palm leaf and are held with small knots tied on the outside, between 125 and 145 of them on each shade. The edge is bound with a raffia cord, and a small brass cap at the top takes a rust coloured braided fabric flex. It measures 71cm one way and 86cm the other, and stands 20cm deep.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe bulb hangs below the shade rather than inside it, so this is a canopy and not a cover. The raffia takes the light on its underside and glows, the fold throws a shadow across itself, and the bulb is in full view from a seat or a bed below. At 86cm at its widest it needs room: over a bed, a long table or a sitting area rather than a hall or a landing.
