The face and the rim carry a cream glaze, milky rather than white and faintly glossy. The glaze stops in a sharp line just below the rim, and below that the terracotta clay is left bare and matt, a warm tan running round the underside and the foot.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 21.6cm this is a side plate rather than a dinner plate: bread and butter beside a bowl of soup, a couple of vegetables set down next to a main, a slice of cake with a fork. Stacked, the band of bare clay under each rim shows as a fine line between the plates.
