chip-striped-stoneware-bowl-24cm-cream
Chip Striped Stoneware Bowl 24cm - Cream

Description

This wide, shallow stoneware bowl is handpainted with stripes around the outside and a scattering of small dots across the inside, and the word CHIPS is lettered on its side. It measures 24cm across and 7cm tall, so it is broad rather than deep: an open bowl that sits low and lets its dotted interior show. The body is cream, the rim is softly scalloped, and at 1.08KG it has a reassuring heft. Stoneware is a dense, hard-fired clay, which is why a piece like this feels solid in the hand rather than delicate.

We see it first as a decorative piece for the kitchen, where it brings a cheerful, handpainted note to an open shelf or a dresser, and the lettering gives it a wry humour that guests tend to spot. Because it is wide and low, it also makes a handy catch-all: on a hallway console for keys, sunglasses and post, or on a dressing table for jewellery, hair clips and a watch at the end of the day. In a living room it can hold a ball of yarn and a pair of knitting needles, a few smooth pebbles or a handful of pine cones. It suits anyone who likes a little playfulness at home and prefers pieces that show the work of a brush.

The stripes, dots and lettering are painted by hand, and handpainted work keeps the small marks of the brush, so no two bowls are quite identical. The body is 100% stoneware, so it is the sturdy, weighty kind of ceramic rather than fine china. As a styling note, set it on a stack of books on a side table so its dotted interior is the first thing people see, or put it beside plain, undecorated ceramics and let the painted stripes do the work.

Specification

Height

7cm

Diameter

24cm

Material

100% Stoneware

Colour

Cream

Finish

Handpainted

Weight

1.08KG

Frequently Asked

What material is the bowl?

It is made of 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-fired clay, with a handpainted finish of stripes, dots and lettering.

How big is it?

It measures 24cm across and 7cm tall, so it is a wide, shallow bowl rather than a deep one.

How heavy is the bowl?

It weighs 1.08KG, so it has a solid, substantial feel and is not a lightweight piece.

Is the pattern the same inside and out?

No. The outside is painted with vertical stripes and the word CHIPS, while the inside carries a scattering of small painted dots.

How might I use it at home?

We like it as a decorative bowl on a kitchen shelf, or as a catch-all for keys, jewellery, yarn or pine cones.

Is each bowl identical?

Each one is painted by hand, so expect small differences in the brushwork from one bowl to the next.
