The seed cavity in the top is lined with a metal dish and a short spike stands at its centre. The wood carries the marks it came with: adze cuts across the front, splits along the grain, worn edges and the colour of long use.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe spike takes a pillar candle, which stands on top of the block rather than sinking into it. At 8cm high and 20cm across, the holder is low and wide, so it sits on a coffee table, a hearth or a wide windowsill without standing over what is beside it.
